Oil sands, also known as tar sands, are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit found in certain locations around the world. They consist of a mixture of sand, clay, water, and a heavy, viscous form of petroleum known as bitumen.

How It Works

Oil sands are typically mined using surface mining techniques, similar to those used in coal mining. The extracted material is then transported to an oil sands processing plant. Here, the bitumen is separated from the sand and water using a hot water extraction process. The bitumen is then upgraded into synthetic crude oil, which can be refined into various petroleum products.

Alternatively, in-situ recovery methods can be used when the oil sands are too deep to mine. These methods involve injecting steam or a mixture of steam and solvents into the oil sands deposit to heat the bitumen and make it flow. The heated bitumen is then pumped to the surface for processing.

Why It Matters

Oil sands are a significant source of global energy. As of 2021, Canada's oil sands are the third-largest proven reserves of crude oil in the world, behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The oil sands industry is a major contributor to Canada's economy, providing thousands of jobs and generating billions of dollars in government revenue.

However, the extraction and processing of oil sands have significant environmental impacts. The mining and upgrading of bitumen release large amounts of greenhouse gases, making oil sands one of the most carbon-intensive sources of crude oil. The industry also requires large amounts of water and generates significant amounts of waste, including tailings, which can pose environmental risks if not properly managed.
